Neeraj Chopra won his second Olympic medal by taking silver in men’s javelin throw competition. Aman Sehrawat added another bronze to India’s haul by winning men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event.

Track and field

Track and field is an international sporting event that brings together some of the greatest athletes every summer to compete as individuals or members of teams, running over specified distances or, for hurdling and steeplechase events, climbing obstacles.

Individual athletes often specialize in one event type while many combine events to increase their odds of medal success. One prestigious track and field competition held every four years is the Olympic Games where thousands of athletes from around the globe gather. Winners receive gold medals; runners-up earn silver; third place receives bronze.

The Olympic Games originated in 776 bc and were briefly suspended under Roman emperor Nero in AD 393. Modern-era Olympic Games resumed after several changes were made in 1896, when women began competing in some events. Since then, events have continued to evolve with over 31 track and field events now being featured at these Games.

On Thursday, India won six medals at the Paris Olympic Games after Neeraj Chopra and Aman Sehrawat won bronze medals in men’s hockey and men’s and women’s 4x400m relay respectively. Mary Kom also claimed her second Olympic medal by winning Women’s 51kg boxing round 32.

Lakshya Sen defeated HS Prannoy 21-12, 21-6 to advance into the badminton men’s quarter-finals while Anjum Moudgil and Sift Kaur Samra placed 18th and 31st in Women’s 50m rifle three positions respectively.

On Friday, India increased their medal count to seven as Aman Sehrawat earned bronze in men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling against Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz and became its youngest medallist ever at just 22 years old. Meanwhile in men’s 69kg Vikas Krishan suffered an opening loss against Great Britain’s Luke McCormack but will compete next week against Great Britain in men’s 74kg class. India’s archery contingent continues its strong showing with Deepika Kumari competing in Women’s rankings rounds in archery competition.

Wrestling

India’s Aman Sehrawat, 21, became the youngest Olympic medallist when he defeated Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz 13-5 for bronze. Before this match-up commenced, Aman had also defeated North Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov and former world champion Zelimkhan Abakarov to qualify as an Asian champion and become an Olympic medalist.

Reetika Hooda of India earned her spot in the bronze medal round for women’s 76kg freestyle, where she will meet Bernadett Nagy of Hungary as eighth seed. Reetika, who holds rank 8, defeated Aiperi Medet Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan during repechage to advance. Both Manika Batra and Margaryta Pesotska will also vie for this prized prize in this event.

Snoop Dogg was among the stars who participated in the torch relay ceremony before the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics and also made appearances at several events. His presence is quite popular among French audiences and when performing live he even earned him an ovation from them!

Snoop Dogg was seen at various events of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, including Friday night’s opening ceremony and Sunday’s closing ceremony featuring numerous international music acts.

Sreejesh was a key member of India’s men’s hockey team that won bronze at Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and now he has decided to retire from hockey at 36 years old. Sreejesh expressed that his dreams had come true and success had been achieved while offering best wishes to future generations of Indian hockey players and expressed thanks for their service to India’s hockey nation. The International Olympic Association also extended their gratitude for Sreejesh’s contributions.

Hockey

At its Olympic debut at Paris 1900, India was represented by Norman Pritchard who won two silver medals – its inaugural Olympic medals ever. India then enjoyed many memorable moments during its over century-long history of participation – such as P.R. Sreejesh’s dream performance in goalkeeper P.R. But for all India’s Olympic success, there have been setbacks as well. From missed opportunities for HS Prannoy in men’s singles tennis and PV Sindhu’s disappointing big game performances to golfer Sumit Nagal’s disappointing T40 display at this year’s Olympics, Indian athletes haven’t managed to reach their full potential in Rio.

But India’s shooting contingent broke their long Olympic medal drought when Manu Bhaker and Swapnil Kusale, two of India’s premier shooters, earned bronze medals in the 10m air pistol and men’s 3m springboard events respectively. Additionally, both sides managed to keep their places on their respective men’s and women’s hockey teams with solid performances from both sides.

On Wednesday, India will face off against Australia in Pool A while the women take on Netherlands in Group 2.

Track and field competitors Jyothi Yarraji will vie to qualify for the women’s 100m hurdles final while high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, triple jumpers Abdulla Aboobacker and Praveen Chithravel and wrestler Antim Panghal (who replaced Vinesh Phogat in 53kg category), high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, high jumper Sarvesh Kushare as well as wrestler Antim Panghal will face their respective qualification rounds and qualification rounds respectively. Wrestler Antim Panghal will begin her Olympic journey by facing her elimination rounds in wrestling category 53kg category.

Archery

Archery is an Olympic sport which requires patience, precision and focus – and has been around since 10,000 B.C. It was originally invented as a way of hunting but eventually turned into a competitive sport with Olympic events being the pinnacle. At each competition participants must aim their arrows at targets in close proximity to the center so as to win medals; ranking rounds and head-to-head elimination formats may also be used during competition.

Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav of India failed to advance past the qualifying round in mixed team archery competition. Losing to An San and Kim Je Deok of South Korea with 653 scores during qualifying round rounds. Their performance had placed them as ninth ranked archery team at this event.

Manu Bhaker and Yashaswini Singh Deswal were unable to qualify for the final in the women’s 10m air pistol event; finishing 26th and 32nd in qualifying respectively.

Lakshya Sen defeated HS Prannoy 21-12 21-6 to advance to the quarter-finals in men’s singles play, while PV Sindhu lost in women’s singles Round of 16 action against He Bing Jiao of China.

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran finished sixth in Heat 1 of the men’s 200m medley while sailing’s Vishnu Saravanan finished 25th overall after two races of the men’s dinghy ILCA 7 Race 1 and 2.

Neeraj Chopra won India its second gold medal at 2024 by breaking American Michael Phelps’ previous record of 88.54 metres set back in 2012. Additionally, Neeraj broke Asian Records that had stood since 2005 at 89.42 metres for over 10 years – taking this milestone feat by storm! As well as claiming gold he also carried India’s national flag at its closing ceremony alongside P.T Usha as flagbearer; making history by becoming oldest ever Indian flagbearer at an Olympic games! The Olympic games will wrap up on August 9th after final competition has wrapped up. Aman Sehrawat won bronze for Indian wrestling competition – placing him third overall.
