Origins

Pakistan boasts a vibrant cricketing tradition dating back to 1935. Their national team competes in all forms of the game – Test matches included.

Their national team is overseen by the Pakistan Cricket Board and have experienced many ups and downs over their history; but are capable of some spectacular performances.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Pakistan struggled to establish itself as a competitive cricketing nation. Things started to change dramatically during the 1980s as Pakistan experienced tremendous success, including winning their inaugural Asian Test Championship in 1998 and also the ICC World Cup and Asia Cup titles during that decade.

The 1990s was a golden period for fast bowling in Pakistan, with Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis emerging as two of the premier fast bowlers worldwide.

But this period also witnessed multiple corruption scandals with six players being disciplined for various anti-corruption offenses during this era, including Wasim and Waqar themselves.

Pakistan eventually returned to great form during the 2010s. Under Misbah-ul-Haq’s captaincy, they dominated domestic cricket and won several major tournaments; additionally they achieved No.1 status in Test cricket – an accolade awarded through special recognition known as a Test mace trophy.

The team grew and expanded its reach internationally, winning one of cricket’s premier tournaments – the ICC Champions Trophy – in 2017; also reaching quarter-finals of 2015 Cricket World Cup but losing closely contested match to arch rival India in close contest.

Though not garnering as much media coverage as its male counterparts, Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team remains a formidable contender.

Boasting notable players such as Nida Dar, Bismah Maroof, and Fatima Sana as examples of talent within its ranks; however, their consistency and performance still needs improvement to become true contenders; otherwise their future prospects look bright.

Defeats

Pakistan has had some serious setbacks. At the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, they lost three of their initial five matches; but under Imran Khan’s leadership they bounced back strong, playing like “cornered tigers.”

After winning the World Cup, Pakistan went on to dominate other top teams. One such series included beating England 2-0 – their number-one opponent at that time with Misbah ul-Haq scoring an outstanding century against them in one match! In 2014, they became number one Test team again as well as being the inaugural side to claim two Test series victories in UAE since ranking system began.

Pakistan were knocked out of the 2022 ODI World Cup quarter-finals by Afghanistan by eight wickets, despite Babar Azam’s outstanding batting performance.

Pakistan is famous for their fast bowlers. Indeed, they boast some of the greatest fast bowlers worldwide. Unfortunately though, their batting can sometimes prove problematic as well.

Misbah ul-Haq achieved their greatest victory when they whitewashed Australia at home during the second Test match in 2012 in Abu Dhabi, setting an all-time fastest Test century record and setting a precedent that still stands today.

This win proved decisive and marked only once Pakistan had ever defeated Australia at home before that day in 2012.

In 2010, there was a major cheating scandal among players of an American soccer team. Certain of its members were caught engaging in what is commonly referred to as “spot-fixing,” leading them to being banned for life and receiving prison sentences – this scandal caused serious issues with regards to team spirit and being seen by fans alike as being huge setback.

Even with their setbacks, Pakistan remains a powerful team. Their players are passionate and enjoy representing their nation. India-Pakistan rivalry remains exciting for fans watching both teams clash; especially dedicated Pakistani supporters in the UK known as The Stani Army cheer loudly at each match while aiding charity work; plus they even have their own mascot, an enormous green bat.

Highlights

Bangladesh and Pakistan will face each other in a thrilling Super 4 match that could go down as one of the greatest Bangladesh-Pakistan encounters ever seen.

Reigning champions Bangladesh will go up against an in-form Pakistan team led by an exciting new captain, featuring an attacking player who is shredding record books ruthlessly, along with an ambitious young squad brimming with potential. It’s a repeat of 2024 series when both teams met and produced an electrifying series full of drama and excitement!

Bangladesh’s top order comes under immediate pressure, losing one wicket every three overs in the initial overs. Shaheen Afridi struck early, dismissing Towhid Hridoy for five with an accurate full delivery caught behind backward point from Shaheen Afridi’s full delivery – while Bangladesh’s lower order struggle to keep up with Pakistan’s aggressive bowling and disciplined fielding.

Haris Rauf strikes again, taking out Saif Hassan for 18 with a smart leading edge that Rishad Hossain caught at short third man with ease.

Ayub kept up the pressure with tight deliveries featuring both flight and turn aimed at testing Bangladesh’s batsmen; and kept alternating caution with running between wickets effectively to maintain pressure against Bangladesh’s middle order.

Taskin Ahmed shines with his left-arm orthodox spin bowling, providing both batsmen with pressure. He mixes pace and flight well, restricting Bangladesh to singles and nudges.

Nurul Hassan shows opportunism with sensible stroke play using his feet to drive and cut deliveries into vacant gaps while narrowly escaping run out by googly delivery; an LBW appeal against him was ultimately turned down.

Meherob and Rakibul Hasan both escape punishment in the first powerplay with close misses at run-out and stumping opportunities, before Mohammad Nawaz nearly scores four by nudging Meherob towards third man but the ball drops short of third man for four; Bangladesh can still keep this closely-contested contest by playing disciplined cricket while taking care when bowling or fielding.

Future

Pakistan have made major tournaments memorable in the past and achieved prominence amongst world’s top seven teams across Test, ODI and T20 cricket.

But their former successes seem distant now: they lost their opening match of 2024 T20 World Cup as well as suffering humiliating defeats against lesser-ranked opponents; their ranking has even declined from 7th in Tests to 5th in ODIs.

The problems facing the team are complex and multifaceted; however, political interference and leadership instability is a primary contributor.

This has resulted in frequent coaching changes, with Gary Kirsten quitting just six months into his role due to pressure from PCB’s top brass and issues selecting players; such instability not only detracts from player morale but also hinders preparations and performances of the team as a whole.

Even amid these difficulties, there are some encouraging signs that Pakistan’s national team has a promising future. Young players are showing great promise at international competitions and could provide the backbone of an improved squad with their skills, speed and mentality making them great leaders of their team and contributing to Pakistan’s rise in cricket globally.

Daniyal Amir, Aamer Jamal and Mohammad Rizwan are among the most exciting prospects for Pakistan cricket, earning him the nickname of an explosive match-winner with his explosive bowling action and bat/spin ability – two talents which combine perfectly for Islamabad United in PSL 2024 season with Amir’s impressive consistency and ability to control innings control.

Nida Dar is Pakistan’s all-time wicket taker in One Day Internationals while Fatima Sana and other rising stars continue to contribute for their team.

Pakistan will face England at Headingley, Lord’s, and Edgbaston for three Test series beginning March 2026, providing crucial preparation ahead of hosting an ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup tournament later that year in Sri Lanka.
