Team
Australia will look to gain the upper hand against South Africa in their three-match ODI series starting Tuesday at Cazalys Stadium in Cairns with the first match being played at Cazalys Stadium – both sides possessing impressive batting performances that should make this series highly-anticipated and anticipated! Both sides hope that it will lead to exciting encounters.
South Africa are led in one-day internationals by Temba Bavuma and have been supported by some exciting young players, with Aiden Markram emerging as their most reliable batsman while captain Bavuma hit some crucial fifties himself. South Africa are also packed with spinners such as Keshav Maharaj and Lungi Ngidi to keep opponents at bay.
Mitchell Marsh will take charge of Australia during Pat Cummins’s rest period as stand-in skipper of ODIs. Marsh’s aggressive batting approach proved successful in T20I series but can sometimes result in collapses; unfortunately the team also suffers injuries with Mitchell Owen (back), Matt Short (side strain) and Lance Morris (back) all being sidelined due to injury concerns.
Australia will hope Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson and Tanveer Sangha can add depth to their squad in front of their home fans. It will be an important test of their skills.
Ottis Gibson will encourage his South Africa players to play their own brand of cricket, something which has paid dividends during T20I series. Gibson’s philosophy has helped unlock potential in young squad players such as Dewald Brevis, Gerald Coetzee, Wiaan Mulder and Matthew Breetzke.
South Africa took an emphatic victory in the opening ODI, led by Aiden Markram who scored an unbeaten century. Temba Bavuma (65) and Matthew Breetzke (57) also contributed to South Africa’s success, while in the field Lungi Ngidi, Burger and Subrayen’s bowlers took an impressive six wicket haul including Adam Zampa being bowled by Subrayen while spinners picked up two wickets each from Adam Zampa before Lungi Ngidi also bowled Adam Zampa for 11. Overall it was an exciting contest that left fans eagerly waiting to see whether Australia can replicate their T20I dominance when switching formats next time round!
Players
The teams will play three T20Is and three-match ODI series in Darwin, Australia’s Northern Territory. ODIs had originally been scheduled for Australia’s more traditional summer season; however due to fixture congestion they have been moved further north where there are better weather conditions than Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide.
South Africa are looking forward to adding another victory against Australia in T20I series and use this tour as preparation for hosting 2026 World Cup, taking place right here at home.
Mitchell Marsh has indicated that as stand-in ODI captain he will continue the aggressive batting approach that propelled Australia to a 2-1 T20I series win against South Africa. Australia may be without injured Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc but have plenty of talented players at their disposal to lead them forward.
South Africa’s young batting unit has shown encouraging signs of progress during this tour and could use the ODIs as an invaluable platform to cement their places in the side. Kagiso Rabada and Dwaine Pretorius have made strong impressions with their bowling, while Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Matthew Breetzke and Nqaba Peter have made waves with their bat.
Shukri Conrad is encouraging his players to show their creativity with the ball and tap into their individual states of genius, something which has paid dividends thus far on this tour. Teenage spinner Nqaba Peter, 19, delivered an exceptional performance in their first match against Sri Lanka while rookie leg-spinner Senuran Muthusamy has already made an impressionful statement with his performance.
Tristan Stubbs will be expected to step in and fill Klaasen’s absence in the middle order, having shown promise in T20Is but faltering somewhat in ODIs; South Africa hopes he can do just that before their home World Cup next year. Batting has been strengthened thanks to Dewald Brevis and George Linde; hopefully they can replicate these improvements over the ODI series as well.
Schedule
South Africa and Australia will play three T20Is and a series of one-day internationals over the course of a month, beginning December 14 in Johannesburg with subsequent matches being played at Gqebera and Paarl. When India last met these teams they won their one-day series 4-1 but this series should prove much closer.
The Proteas represent South Africa in international men’s cricket competition and are administered by Cricket South Africa. As full members of the International Cricket Council and current world champions for both Test and One Day International cricket competitions respectively, their name derives from South Africa’s national flower, the King Protea.
South Africa debuted test cricket in 1888-89 and became an official member of the International Cricket Council in 1905; early struggles eventually gave way to competitiveness by early 20th century. Unfortunately, apartheid resulted in a 21-year international ban starting in 1970 that effectively stopped their progress at its apex.
This tour, consisting of three T20Is and three ODIs, provides both sides with an invaluable chance to regain winning momentum in advance of the World Cup. South Africa have an experienced squad composed of both veteran cricketers as well as young talent while Australia are led by Mitchell Marsh with powerful all-rounders Tim David and Cameron Green making up their formidable line-up.
Tim David made an astonishing 83 off 56 balls to lead South Africa past Australia by eight runs in Darwin; Kwena Maphaka captured four wickets as South Africa recorded another win in Cairns; however, Australia collapsed from 50-4 to 167 all out with only Ryan Rickelton’s unbeaten 71 going unrewarded.
On Friday in Mackay, both teams will compete to maintain their winning momentum and hope to take home victory in this series final match. Australia has struggled in home conditions so they must show resilience if they are to avoid another embarrassing batting collapse; South Africa have shown they possess strong batting abilities recently and should provide fierce opposition.

Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Matthew Breetzke all hit half centuries in that match; Keshav Maharaj proved pivotal as he took five wickets and helped defend an ambitious target set by Australia.
Both teams will aim to win this match as it could give them a chance of taking the series win. South Africa are well placed to do just that as they have won seven consecutive bilateral ODIs against Australia; however, hosts Australia could turn this contest into an intense contest.
Kagiso Rabada’s injury will be a huge setback to South African hopes in this series and must now step up their bowling attack if they hope to remain competitive.
Proteas batting will be led by captain Temba Bavuma and include Prenelan Subrayen and Dewald Brevis making their ODI debuts – Brevis showed his mettle in T20I series and will look to continue this success into this format.
England have recently struggled in ODI cricket, and will hope to turn things around when they face South Africa Proteas in a three-ODI series that ends this Sunday in Southampton. England won their last T20I meeting 2-1 after an exciting two-match finale; winner will take unassailable 3-0 lead going into final match which will decide series winner – Joe Root and Jos Buttler have proven themselves worthy representatives while South African Proteas hope to maintain momentum as they prepare for World Cup action this weekend!
