James Wiseman
The Boston Celtics currently stand in second place in the Eastern Conference standings and can catch Cleveland Cavaliers with a win against Detroit Pistons on Friday night. Although starting slowly, Boston was able to pull away in the second half and secure victory – their sixth in succession and one game behind Cavaliers.
The Pistons have had a rough season so far, but have had some close matches against the Celtics this year. Although they lost the first meeting 102-96, they rebounded to win their second encounter 109-106 and must continue being aggressive on both ends of the court while working harder at rebounding than they have in past seasons.
Even without Jayson Tatum for the remainder of this season, the Celtics remain poised for a playoff run with their current record of 20-5. Their last loss came against Memphis Grizzlies – their fourth consecutive defeat that snapped their three-game winning streak and put an end to their three game winning streak.
Though they face injury issues, the Celtics can count on young players such as James Wiseman to step up when needed and fill any voids that might exist in the team’s success this season. He averages 24 points and eight rebounds per game for them and this has been key in their rise to success this year.
The Pistons, on the other hand, have had difficulty scoring on a consistent basis; their shooting has been unreliable and their defense subpar. While there’s still much work ahead in order for them to compete with Boston Celtics effectively, signs indicate that they could be successful rivals.
The Celtics have won both of their matches against the Pistons this season, including both matches at TD Garden – each starting at 7:30 PM ET and being broadcast live by NBC Sports Network – with four straight victories over them over this span.
Jaden Ivey
Jaden Ivey arrived to the game looking poised to establish himself as one of the Pistons’ young pieces, having averaged 17.0 points and hitting two three-pointers over his previous four games. Unfortunately, an incident during the fourth quarter proved otherwise: Ivey dove into Kyrie Irving from Boston while racing for a loose ball; colliding into him and appearing to break his left leg before remaining on the ground in pain while players from both teams surrounded him and shielded their eyes away from his face – eventually being helped off before eventually returning back into action a while his return looks unlikely in short-term terms.
Boston led by 25 points early in the fourth quarter and held on to defeat Detroit, 124-118. Ivey was Detroit’s best performer with 26 points and five rebounds – his speedy drive to the basket threatening Boston defenses throughout.
Jayson Tatum led all Boston starters with 23 points and seven rebounds while Derrick White and Payton Pritchard each registered 19 markers. Sam Hauser made an impressionful bench impression as well, scoring 14 points with 11 boards on this night.
Both teams were dealing with injuries coming into the matchup, with the Celtics missing guard Jrue Holiday (bruised right shoulder) and forward Al Horford (right foot sprain). For the Pistons, Bobi Klintman (right calf injury) and Cade Cunningham (lower back strain) had to sit out.
Tobias Harris had a disappointing outing, shooting only 2-of-11 with no assists and being held scoreless by Jalen Duren’s subpar defensive performance, as the Celtics found ample open shots around and at the rim.
The Pistons made a valiant effort against the league-leading Celtics on Thursday, but ultimately fell short of securing victory. Still, this experience will serve them well going forward.
Derrick White
On Monday night at TD Garden, both teams are entering with confidence after winning their last two games. Boston Celtics star duo Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been stellar recently; undefeated in 10 straight games while Detroit Pistons have struggled due to injuries and slumping play.
As both Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday were out injured, the Celtics needed other players to step up. Payton Pritchard answered their call – scoring 31 points in just the first quarter alone to lead his team to an early lead and give Kyrie Irving plenty of scoring chances.
Pritchard has been one of the key reasons behind why the Celtics have been one of the best teams in the NBA this season. Since being put into starting lineup, he’s made sure his mark by sinking deep threes or sneaking past defense for layups – unstoppable performances like these have helped elevate them as one of the premier squads.
The Celtics’ rim protection was also instrumental to their victory against the Pistons. The team blocked seven shots and prevented many potential scoring opportunities at the basket – this area where they have improved greatly from last season and should remain one of their strengths throughout this season.
Even while shorthanded, the Celtics managed to score enough against the Pistons to secure their sixth straight win on Monday night. Both Jaylen Brown and Payton Pritchard contributed greatly, helping their team capitalize on home court advantage.
The Celtics have now gone undefeated all-time against the Pistons since meeting for their last time in 2013, winning 113-102 in a playoffs matchup. Since then they’ve won five out of six meetings with Detroit this year; Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday won’t be available but other weapons like Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis should provide enough assistance for victory on Sunday afternoon.
Jaylen Brown
The Boston Celtics are an unexpectedly strong team, winning games and looking like they might take home the Eastern Conference title. Their young players have come up big, with Jaylen Brown emerging as an invaluable force. His 22.80 average points, 5.44 rebounds, and 5.54 assists per game has led the team’s success so far while also being an effective defender (he’s managed to cover three top scorers so far while averaging over two steals per game!). Furthermore, he is one of four Celtics to have had 50-point, 10-rebound games, making him an obvious candidate for finals MVP consideration.
The Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons will meet up this Thursday (Dec. 12th) evening at TD Garden. Following an unflattering loss against Memphis Grizzlies, the defending champions hope to avenge themselves by defeating Detroit Pistons at home; on the other hand, undefeated Pistons’ home court would like nothing better than to build on recent success against New York Knicks.
This will be an intense matchup for both sides. Although the Celtics are clearly superior to the Pistons, they must bring their A game if they hope to come out on top here. Meanwhile, Detroit has been struggling recently but will look to end their losing streak and advance towards playoff contention.
Boston currently stands in second place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 16-8 record, while Detroit stands 11th with 10-5 marks and still looking for their first victory against them this season.
The Celtics and Pistons have had an ongoing rivalry dating back to the 1980s. Most notably, in 2008 when they met in the Eastern Conference Finals – where Boston triumphed 6-1 and won their inaugural Maurice Podoloff Trophy! Tonight’s match-up will tip-off at TD Garden at 7:30 PM ET with coverage provided by both NBC Sports Boston and NBA League Pass.
